BWP means boiling-waterproof, BWR means boiling-water-resistant, and MR means moisture-resistant. These labels must be read with the full product standard. BWP alone does not identify marine plywood or establish that a panel suits a structural application.
Read the standard as well as the grade
IS 303:2024 covers general-purpose plywood in MR, BWR and BWP grades. IS 710:2024 is a separate marine plywood standard. Do not substitute a general-purpose BWP board for a specified marine board based on the grade letters alone. See the full standard comparison.
BWP vs BWR: which should you ask for?
Choose the grade required by the application, then confirm it against the complete product standard. BWP is not automatically the best specification for every job, and BWR is not a substitute when a design explicitly calls for marine plywood. For fitted furniture, describe the expected wetting and finish; for structural or vessel work, follow the approved design and material requirements.
| Label | Meaning | Buying question |
|---|---|---|
| MR | Moisture-resistant | Does the specified product suit the intended sheltered use and protection? |
| BWR | Boiling-water-resistant | Which product standard, construction and evidence accompany this bond grade? |
| BWP | Boiling-waterproof | Is the requirement general-purpose BWP or a separately specified marine product? |
What to put on the order
| Item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Product standard | The standard and edition required by the application |
| Grade and construction | The quoted grade, core, faces and any required performance classes |
| Dimensions | Thickness, sheet size, tolerances and cutting list |
| Evidence | Applicable licence details, panel markings and test reports matching the product |
| Installation | Supports, joints, finish and maintenance required for the intended use |
Choose for the complete application
Describe humidity, splashes, sustained wetting, load and protection when requesting a quote. A laboratory bond classification is not a promise that an unprotected assembly can remain wet indefinitely. Confirm the installation and maintenance requirements alongside the panel specification.
For boat hulls, decks, structural bulkheads and transoms, use the material and thickness required by the approved vessel design. See our marine plywood thickness guide.
Our offered ranges
For furniture enquiries, compare the dedicated BWR hardwood range and the fitted-joinery buying guide. Our commercial plywood page describes the MR and BWR products offered. Our marine plywood page describes the marine supply specification. Availability, supporting documents and final terms are confirmed in the written quotation.

Questions buyers ask
What does BWP mean in plywood?
BWP means boiling-waterproof. Read it with the full standard stated for the board; the label alone does not establish marine suitability.
Is BWR the same as BWP?
No. They are different grades. Confirm the grade and the complete product standard required for the job, together with the supporting documents.
Does a BWP board need protection?
Follow the design and coating instructions for the application. The bond grade does not replace protection of faces, edges, joints and fixings or the required maintenance.
Can I choose plywood from the face species alone?
No. Confirm the full panel construction and required properties. A face veneer name alone does not establish the bond grade, product standard or structural suitability.
Need a grade quoted?
Send the application, required standard, dimensions and quantity. We will confirm the available supply specification in writing.
