Choose packing plywood from the cargo's protection needs and the complete transport plan. Voyage duration alone cannot predict whether a panel will remain serviceable. Ask for the required product standard, bond grade and evidence alongside the packing design.
Read the grade with the product standard
MR means moisture-resistant, BWR means boiling-water-resistant and BWP means boiling-waterproof. IS 303:2024 covers general-purpose plywood in these grades; IS 710 is a separate marine plywood standard. BWP wording alone does not identify a marine panel. See the BWP vs BWR buying guide and the BIS IS 303 product manual.
A laboratory bond classification is not a guarantee for an entire crate, a voyage or indefinite wet exposure. The panel construction, joints, finish, storage and protection must be assessed together. A bond label also does not establish fungal resistance, cleanliness or approval for pharmaceutical packaging.
Describe the exposure before selecting material
| Part of the journey | Information to provide |
|---|---|
| Storage before and after shipping | Covered or exposed storage, expected waiting periods and the planned protection. |
| Handling and restraint | The cargo drawing, support points, handling methods and approved packing instructions. |
| Moisture-sensitive goods | The buyer's barrier, cleanliness and moisture-control requirements. |
| Route and handovers | The actual carrier booking, transfer points and receiving arrangements. |
| Acceptance evidence | Required grade, standard, inspection and reports identifying the offered construction. |
Where the buyer or packing designer specifies a grade, obtain approval before substituting it. For an undecided specification, present the exposure and handling brief so that the material and complete packing design can be reviewed together.
Verify the offered product
Compare panel identification, applicable licence scope and any requested test report with the quotation. The report should identify its sample, test method and result. Agree inspection and acceptance requirements before production; a generic certificate or face-veneer name is not evidence for every offered construction.
Prepare an export-packing enquiry
Start with the current packing plywood choices and the crate and pallet checklist. If marine plywood is explicitly specified, use the marine product details for that separate requirement.
Send the cargo and packing brief, quantity, destination and required documents. The quotation confirms the available material and work included. No generic route table or elapsed-day rule can replace the agreed product and packing specification.
