ISPM-15 Marks, Reuse and Repair: Export Enquiry Guide

Inspect repairs and replacement components before reusing timber packaging.

Do not decide whether used export packaging is acceptable from its age or a treatment certificate alone. Identify the materials, marks, condition and any changes since treatment, then ask the authorised provider and importer to confirm the requirements for the next destination.

Check the materials first

ISPM 15 concerns regulated raw-wood packaging. Processed plywood has a separate exemption; a plywood case may still contain regulated solid-wood runners or framing. Start with the whole-packaging checklist.

Before reusing a case or pallet

  • Record the existing marks and whether they remain readable.
  • List every replaced or added component and its source.
  • Check storage conditions, damage and signs of pest contamination.
  • Give the importer the destination and packaging details for a current requirements check.

DAFF explains that unchanged marked packaging can remain compliant, but treatment does not protect it permanently from later infestation. Reuse does not create a customs-clearance guarantee.

Repairs and marking need an authorised decision

For repaired or rebuilt packaging, show the provider which original components remain, what was replaced and which marks are present. The provider must apply the relevant standard and national arrangements to determine the treatment and marking required. Do not copy a mark, assume that an old certificate covers a changed assembly, or treat a general online checklist as approval.

Prepare the quotation request

Send the drawing, component materials, quantity, destination, photographs of existing marks and details of any repairs. Agree the inspection, treatment, marking and documents included. Cochin Wood arranges required solid-wood treatment through a DPPQS-registered provider where included in the quotation; availability, cost and timing are confirmed for the actual order.

See boxes and crates or pallets, then send the packaging details.
