Perumbavoor Plywood Market Commentary

Demand signals, thickness mix and raw-material movement for MR packing-grade plywood, read from inside Kerala’s Perumbavoor cluster by the Cochin Wood Industries trading desk. Edition 1 — Q2 FY 2026–27, published July 2026.

TLDR: MR packing-grade rubberwood plywood, 8×4 ft, is the volume line in the Perumbavoor cluster. Cluster pricing moves with log and veneer cost through the year, so ask us for the current number against your spec. 12mm and 18mm dominate case work; Okoume-faced panels lead export enquiries. This edition is the Q2 FY 2026–27 read. It is refreshed when the cluster moves enough to be worth reporting.

Why Perumbavoor sets the pace

Perumbavoor, in Ernakulam district, is Kerala’s plywood capital. Several hundred veneer and plywood units operate in and around the town. Raw material is close: rubberwood comes off plantation estates across central Kerala as trees finish their latex life and are felled for replanting. The port is close too — Cochin Port sits about 40 km away. Captive plantation timber, dense peeling and pressing capacity, and a container berth within the hour: that is why Perumbavoor is the reference market for packing-grade plywood in South India.

This tracker publishes what the cluster is doing. Each quarter our trading desk compiles indicative ex-factory ranges for MR packing-grade rubberwood plywood and records the demand signals in our own order book. Our group has made plywood in Perumbavoor since 1986; this desk sits inside the cluster, not outside it. Species detail behind the panels is on Woods We Use.

Baseline: where the cluster stands, Q2 FY 2026–27

Ranges below are for MR (moisture-resistant) packing-grade rubberwood plywood, 8×4 ft sheets. This is the baseline edition — no quarter-on-quarter movement is shown because there is no prior edition to move against.

Indicative cluster range, ex-factory Perumbavoor. GST & freight extra. Not a quotation — confirm current rates before ordering.

Specifications and load data for the range are on the packing plywood page. For how thickness, grade and freight build into a landed cost, see the plywood price guide.

Desk commentary: what is driving the market

Qualitative observations from our desk this quarter. We publish drivers, not forecasts, and we do not dress observations up as numbers we cannot verify.

Rubberwood log supply. Log availability in the cluster follows plantation replanting cycles, and felling decisions follow latex economics, not plywood demand. Our desk sees log flow as the swing factor mills watch most closely; when estate clearances bunch up or thin out, peeling schedules move with them.

Core-veneer availability. The cluster runs on locally peeled rubberwood core veneer, with eucalyptus in some builds. Dried core stock sets the working floor under panel prices — pressing capacity is rarely the constraint; dry veneer is.

Packing demand and the container cycle. Orders indicate steady case and crate work from engineering exporters shipping through Cochin Port. Export crating tracks the container cycle: when sailings and box availability hold steady, crate and pallet orders follow. Our export desk reads the same signal in Gulf-bound enquiries.

Demand signals: which panels are moving

From our order book this quarter:

  • 12mm and 18mm MR packing dominate case work. Heavy-machinery crates typically specify one or both — 12mm for panels and lids, 18mm for bases and load-bearing faces.
  • 8mm holds the lighter end: boxes, partitions and pallet decks.
  • Okoume-faced panels lead export enquiries — lower sheet weight and a cleaner face for shipments to the UAE and Israel. Detail on the Okoume plywood page.

Methodology and how to cite

Compiled by the Cochin Wood Industries trading desk from two inputs: our own order book, domestic and export, and rate checks with factories and veneer suppliers inside the Perumbavoor cluster. Ranges describe the cluster, not a single factory’s rate card, and are indicative — ex-factory Perumbavoor, GST and freight extra.

Edition 1 (this page) sets the baseline. It is refreshed when conditions move enough to be worth reporting, rather than on a fixed calendar. Common questions

What moves packing-plywood pricing in Perumbavoor?

Packing-grade rubberwood plywood (8x4 ft) is the volume line in the Perumbavoor cluster. Cluster pricing moves with log and veneer cost through the year, so ask us for the current number against your thickness, quantity and delivery point.

Why is Perumbavoor important for plywood prices in India?

Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, Kerala, hosts several hundred veneer and plywood units. It draws rubberwood from plantation estates across central Kerala and sits about 40 km from Cochin Port, making it the reference market for packing-grade plywood in South India.

How often is the Perumbavoor plywood tracker updated?

Periodically. Edition 1 (July 2026) covers Q2 FY 2026-27. We refresh it when the cluster moves enough to be worth reporting, rather than on a fixed calendar. It is compiled by the Cochin Wood Industries trading desk from its own order book and rate checks with factories and veneer suppliers inside the cluster.

Can journalists cite this tracker?

Yes. Journalists and analysts may cite the figures with attribution to the Cochin Wood Industries Perumbavoor Tracker.

Which plywood thicknesses are in highest demand for packing?

12mm and 18mm dominate case and crate work for engineering exporters - 12mm for panels and lids, 18mm for bases and load-bearing faces - with 8mm used for lighter boxes and pallet decks. Okoume-faced panels lead export enquiries for their lower sheet weight and cleaner face.
